Skills in Demand (SID) visa

Most common for trades

An Australian employer sponsors you for up to four years. TEA helps negotiate employer sponsorship terms. A later subclass 186 pathway may be available if the applicable criteria are met; permanent residency is not automatic.

  • Employer sponsorship
  • Family inclusion subject to criteria
  • Potential PR pathway subject to eligibility

You're tied to your sponsor — which is why getting the right employer matters.

Employer Nomination Scheme

Permanent residency

Permanent residency sponsored by an employer, either directly or after time on a 482. For experienced tradespeople with a strong sponsor, this can be the single-step prize.

  • Permanent residency from day one
  • Family included
  • Medicare access

Requires a committed sponsor and usually three years' experience in your trade.

189

Skilled Independent visa

No sponsor needed

Points-tested permanent residency with no employer or state sponsor required. Competitive, but strong for younger tradespeople with good English scores and solid experience.

  • Live and work anywhere
  • No sponsor obligations
  • Permanent residency

Invitation rounds are competitive — points strategy is everything.

190 / 491

State-nominated visas

State or territory nomination

State or territory governments decide nominations under their own criteria. Sometimes called state sponsorships, these are separate from employer sponsorship negotiations. The 190 is a permanent visa; the 491 is provisional and regional, with a potential permanent pathway subject to eligibility.

  • Extra points from nomination
  • Regional trades in huge demand
  • Often quicker than 189

You commit to living in the nominating state or region for a period.
